UPLC-MS/MS analysis in support of ecotoxicity studies

The investigation of aquatic toxicity for the classification of chemicals and environmental risk assessment is typically based on toxicity test data for fish, daphnids, and algae/aquatic plants. During these studies the concentration of the substance in medium should be within ± 20% of the initial concentration since only the dissolved fraction of substance is bioavailable and responsible for any toxic effects.
Maintaining the concentration during the course of the studies can be a major challenge for substances that are mixtures or that have limited water solubility, limited stability, high adsorption and/or high volatility. Furthermore, the preparation procedure of the test media can have a large influence on the attained test substance concentration. Therefore, the analytical determination of the actual concentrations at several time points is essential.
The poster will illustrate the benefits of using Ultra Perfomance Liquid Chromatography coupled to tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) in supporting ecotoxicity studies. This state-of-the-art analysis technique combines high resolution separation and short analysis times with sensitive and selective detection. Two examples of ecotoxicity studies for test items that were complex mixtures will be shown to which UPLC-MS/MS analysis was essential.
